Auto Repair Manual - How to read codes (No Special Tools Needed)

NOTE: For this system perform tests while engine is still running, turning the engine off during a fault code test will result in needing to repeat the test.

1 If possible run the engine to bring the oxygen sensor up to operating temperature then switch the engine off.
2 Turn ignition ON and check that the LEDs on the cars ECU are alight.
3 Gently turn the diagnostic mode selector fully clockwise.
4 Run engine and let it idle.
5 Read codes on the ECU as described in the Code Format Description below
Please Note: You will need to activate the systems shown by the codes (23, 24 and 31), while still in diagnostic mode, then re-read the codes. Any remaining codes are the valid ones.
6 Press the continue button to enter the code numbers and get the code description(s).

  • To gain access to the ECU you will need to remove the passanger side kick panel.
Code Format Description

Each code is made up of two series of flashes.
The long flashes indicate the 'tens' digits.
The short flashes indicate the 'ones' digits.
A long pause separates each code sequence.
Code Format Diagram shows code No. 12.
